The religion of Islam has greatly emphasized on cleanliness. As Islam is a complete code of life, therefore, it tells us about many things that are part of our routine life. Islam orders us to do such things which make our life healthy and prosperous. Similarly, Islam asks us to take care of the cleanliness. Thus, there is great importance of cleanliness in Islam we should also keep both ourselves and our environment clean.

Cleanliness in Islam:

Islam stresses on cleanliness and purification of human soul and body. Thus, physical and spiritual purification plus cleanliness is very important for us. Also, from Hadith and Quran, we can learn about the teachings of Islam regarding cleanliness. For remaining happy and at peace, it is important to clean your heart and soul plus physical cleanliness also removes stress. 

Quranic verses and ahadith about cleanliness:

Translations of Quranic verses:

• “O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favour upon you that you may be grateful.” (Quran, 5:6)
• “…Indeed, Allah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves.” (Quran, 2:222)

Ahadith:

• Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) said, “The key to the prayer is cleanliness, its beginning is takbir (saying Allahu Akbar) and its ending is Salam (salutation).” (Abu Dawud)
• Holy Prophet (SAWW) said, “Cleanliness is half the faith (Emaan).” (Sahih Muslim)

 

Types of Purification or Cleanliness:

There are two types of cleanliness and purification which are as follow;

Inner purification:

Inner purification means to clean yourself from inside. By inside, we mean to clean your heart and soul. You can clean your heart and soul by being closer to Allah, by worshiping Him a lot, by following the teachings of Holy Prophet (SAWW) and by practicing the pillars of Islam. You can clean your heart from the grudges by forgiving others and letting things go. Moreover, by avoiding sins and repenting can also purify you from inside.

Outer purification:

Outer purification means to clean yourself from outside. By outside, we mean physical cleanliness. You can keep your body clean for attaining outer purification. Islam guides us about both inner and outer purification. You can take bath, make ablution, clean teeth, use fragrance and wear clean clothes to maintain your outer cleanliness. Moreover, by outer purification we also mean the cleanliness of your home, street and city etc. By avoiding throwing garbage on roads, you can also maintain outer purification.

Thus, cleanliness in Islam is very important as it keeps the human soul and body purified. Moreover, if we will look into the explanation of Zakat in detail, we will come to know that it is a way to purify our wealth plus clean our heart from any greed. Thus, cleanliness in Islam is a broad concept and is not linked with only outer cleanliness, therefore, we should study this concept and follow the teachings of Islam regarding cleanliness in our lives.
