“By the Sun and his (glorious) splendour; By the Moon as she follows him; By the Day as it shows up (the Sun’s) glory; By the Night as it conceals it; By the Firmament and its (wonderful) structure; By the Earth and its (wide) expanse: By the Soul, and the proportion and order given to it; And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right;- Truly he succeeds that purifies it, And he fails that corrupts it! The Thamud (people) rejected (their prophet) through their inordinate wrong-doing, Behold, the most wicked man among them was deputed (for impiety). But the Messenger of Allah said to them: “It is a She-camel of Allah. And (bar her not from) having her drink!” Then they rejected him (as a false prophet), and they hamstrung her. So their Lord, on account of their crime, obliterated their traces and made them equal (in destruction, high and low)! And for Him is no fear of its consequences.”
The main point of this Surah is differentiate the good from bad and warning those people who couldn’t differ between the two plus insisting on following the evil or wrong ways that have an evil outcome too. Initially it is stated that just like sun and moon, day and night and earth and sky differ from each other likewise good and evil are different from each other. Allah has given man powers and he is not uninformed and it is in the unconscious of man that he can distinguish between good and evil.
The future of man depends on how he uses his power of distinguishing between good and evil which Allah has given him in developing the good and suppressing the evil. On promoting good and suppressing evil, man will be successful forever and upon developing evil and suppressing good he will face failure. Furthermore, the importance of prophet hood is mentioned while giving the historical example of the nation of Thamud. The people of Thamud rejected their prophet by their wrong acts. They asked Prophet Salih to show a sign (miracle) if he was saying the truth. On this, Prophet presented a she-camel to them. However, the people of Thamud rejected Prophet and hamstrung the she-camel. On this, Allah caused them to be in destruction.
Upon reciting each and every word of the Holy Quran we gain benefits in the form of rewards. Likewise, reciting Surah Shams will give us great benefits in the form of rewards. Abd-Allaah ibn Mas’ood stated: The Messenger of Allaah (SAWW) said: “Whoever reads one letter from the Book of Allaah will earn one good (hasanah) thereby. One good deed is equal to ten good deeds the like of it. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is a letter, but Alif is a letter, Laam is a letter and Meem is a letter.’” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2910; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 2327)
Furthermore, we can also get great lessons by reciting and knowing the detailed meaning of this Surah. Also, we can know about the history of the people of Thamud by understanding the Surah Shams and can also get aware of their fate and why they faced the destructive consequences. Moreover, we can understand that man has been given the power to differentiate between good and evil from Surah Shams.
There is great importance of Surah Shams as well which we can learn from the following hadith;
It was narrated that Jabir (RA) said “Mu’adh bin Jabal Al-Ansari (RA) led his companions in the ‘Isha’ prayer and he made it long. A man among us went away and prayed by himself. Mu’adh (RA) was told about that and he said: ‘He is a hypocrite.’ When the man heard about that, he went to the Messenger of Allah (SAWW) and told him what Mu’adh had said to him. The Prophet (SAWW) said: ‘Do you want to be a cause of Fitnah (trial, tribulation), O Mu’adh? When you lead the people in prayer, recite “By the sun and its brightness,”[Ash-Shams 91] and “Glorify the Name of your Lord the Most High,” [Al-A’la 87] and “By the night as it envelopes,” [Al-Lail 92] and “Recite in the Name of your Lord.’”[Al-‘Alaq 96]” (Sunan Ibn Majah Vol. 1, Book 5, Hadith 986)
