Knowing about the sixth Islamic month – Jumada al Thani

There are twelve months in the Islamic calender and Jumada al Thani is the sixth one. Islamic or Hijri calender is a lunar calender and the new month of this calender begins with the appearance of a new moon.

However, the list of 12 Islamic months is a follow;
1. Muharram
2. Saffar
3. Rabi al awal
4. Rabi ath Thani
5. Jumada al ula
6. Jumada al Thani
7. Rajab
8. Shaban
9. Ramzan
10. Shawal
11. Dhū al-Qa‘dah
12. Dhū al-Ḥijjah

In this blog we will talk about the sixth Islamic month that is going on currently.

Meaning and origin of Jumada al Thani:

The sixth month of Islamic calender – Jumada al Thani means “second month of summer.” Jumada al Thani is also known as Jumada al Akhir or Jumada al Akhira. The origin of the name of this month is within the word Jumda. From Jumda, the name of sixth month of Islamic calender is derived. This word Jumda, refers to the dry parched land deprived of rain and therefore, it points out towards the dry months.

Significance of Jumada al Thani or Jumada al Akhira:

Every Islamic month has its importance due to different events that took place in those months. Muharram is very significant due to many events and Karbala’s incident is one of those events. Rabi al awal is important for being the birth and death month of the Holy Prophet (SAWW). Dhū al-Ḥijjah is significant because of the hajj and Eid ul Azha. So, similarly all other months of Islamic calender are important as well due to different events.

Jumada al Thani or Jumada al Akhira is also very significant month because of the events that took place in it. In this month, both the birth and death of the Hazrat Muhammad’s (SAWW) beloved daughter, Hazrat Fatimah (RA) took place. She (RA) died on 3rd Jumada al Akhira, 11th AH. Hazrat Fatimah (RA) is very important and respected personality in Islamic history and therefore, her birth and death in Jumada al Thani make this month really significant.

Moreover, the death of first caliph of Islam – Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (RA) also occurred on 22nd Jumada al Thani. Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA) is also a great personality of Islam and his departure from the world in this month makes Jumada al Akhira really important.

Furthermore, other significant events like victory of Hazrat Ali (RA) in the Battle of Bassorah and Battle of Salasil also took place in the sixth month of the Islamic calender which shows the great significance of Jumada al Thani.

Thus, Jumada al Akhira is an important Islamic month and Muslims must know about the basics of this and every month of the Islamic calender in order to become an informed Muslim.
