Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) tolerance towards various religions clearly tells us that we should remain patient with the people of other religions or beliefs. In today’s blog, we will discuss about the tolerance showed by the Holy Prophet (SAWW) towards other religions.

Moreover, Islam is the religion of peace and we have been guided by the Quran that there is no compulsion in religion. It is stated in Surah Baqarah of Holy Quran, “There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion.” (Quran, 2:256) Thus, this shows that we have to avoid force in the religious matters. Moreover, we can also learn that we have to be tolerant with the people of other religions as we are guided.

Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) tolerance towards various religions:

Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) is our last prophet who had guided us about beautiful things by his practice. Likewise, he has also taught us to be tolerant towards other religions by his own practice. The best example of it is the Charter of Madina. In this charter, Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) ensured the peaceful coexistence of Jews, Muslims and people of other religions. The text of Madina Charter can aptly tell us about Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) tolerance towards various religions.

Moreover, Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) had also asked his emissaries that they should not cause any harm to the institutions of the people of other religions. The letter of Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) to his followers tells us that he guided them about paying respect to the religious institutions of other people. All this show us that Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) always taught us of showing tolerance towards other faiths.

Ahadith about Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) tolerance towards various religions:

From the sayings of the Holy Prophet (SAWW) we can also know that how he advised Muslims to be tolerant towards the other religions and its people. Surely, the sayings of the Holy Prophet (SAWW) are the great source of guidance for us and we must learn from them. Following are the ahadith from which we can know about the tolerance of Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) towards other religions;

Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) said, “Beware! Whoever is cruel and hard on a non-Muslim minority, or curtails their rights, or burdens them with more than they can bear, or takes anything from them against their free will; I (Prophet Muhammad) will complain against the person on the Day of Judgment.” (Abu Dawud)

“A desert Arab came and stood up and began to urinate in the mosque. The Companions of Allah’s Messenger said: Stop, stop, but the Messenger of Allah said: Do not interrupt him; leave him alone. They left him alone, and when he finished urinating, Allah’s Messenger called him and said to him: These mosques are not the places meant for urine and filth, but are only for the remembrance of Allah.” (Sahih Muslim)

Thus, Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) was very tolerant towards the people of other religions. He (SAWW) with his practice also guides us to be patient and tolerant. Therefore, we should also take guidance from the Holy Prophet (SAWW) and be tolerant with the people of other religions. In this way, we will also portray a great image of Islam that it is a religion of peace.
