Knowing about history of Ramadan and its importance

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and Muslims fast in this month from dawn to dusk. They refrain from eating, drinking and getting into sexual intercourse during the time of fasting. This month is very important as it’s of great blessings and gives Muslims an opportunity to gain more and more rewards. There is also a history of Ramadan which Muslims should know in order to have proper knowledge about this month.

History of Ramadan:

The first revelation of Quran came in the month of Ramadan to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAWW). It was the night of power, also known as, Laylat-ul-Qadr, on which the first revelation of Quran came. The night of power is one of the five odd nights that come in the last ten days of Ramadan.

Previous holy scriptures were revealed in Ramadan as well:

It is in the hadith that all the holy scriptures were revealed in the month of Ramadan. Thus, it is believed that the tablets of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS), the Holy book of Torah, the Psalms, the Gospel and the Quran were revealed in the month of Ramadan.

Fasting was a religious duty and obligatory for the previous nations as well:

As per Quran, fasting was also a religious duty and obligatory for the previous nations as well. “O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.” (Quran 2:183)

Thus, it is clear from the above mentioned verse of the Quran that fasting was not a new thing in Islam and was a duty for the previous nations as well. Moreover, the Arabs also fasted but they kept fast only on the 10th date of Muharram to get rid of sins and to avert droughts.

Order to keep fasts in the month of Ramadan:

While studying the history of Ramadan, we should also know that when the order to keep fasts in the month of Ramadan came to the Prophet Muhammad (SAWW). It was the second year of hijra, 624 AD and the month of Shaban when the ruling to keep fasts in  Ramzan came from Allah (SWT).

Importance of Ramadan:

There is a great importance of Ramadan in Islam and among Muslims. Fasting is an important duty of the month of Ramadan and fasting is also one of the five pillars of Islam which shows the importance of this month.

Also, the importance of Ramadan can be understood by following ahadees;

  • “When Ramzan starts, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hellfire are closed and the devils are chained.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
  • The Messenger of Allah (SAWW) said: “Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and in the hope of reward, he will be forgiven his previous sins.”
    [Sunan an-Nasa’i Book-22 Hadith-116]

Thus, it is important for the Muslims to know about the history of Ramadan and its importance so that they can have basic knowledge about Ramadan and Islam plus they can understand the significance of Ramzan and thus, strive to achieve more and more rewards in this month.
