Here’s how to fast in Ramadan according to Islam

Ramadan is the holy month of the Muslims in which they fast from dawn to dusk. Ramadan is a month of great blessings and Muslims try to control themselves from committing sins in this holy month. However, as the month of Ramadan comes near many want to know that how to fast in Ramadan according to Islam.

The method is very clear and simple which is known to the majority of the Muslims as they fast every year in this sacred month yet some may desire to repeat the whole process via any informative piece or some may not be aware of the whole process. Thus, for such people, we decided to write on the method of fasting in Ramadan today. So, the steps in the method of how to fast in Ramadan according to Islam are as follow;

  1. Sehri

    The first step is to wake up for sehri about two hours before Fajr. The food is made by the Muslims for sehri and they eat food in order to keep the fast. In summers, it is better to have food like yogurt which may help to reduce the thirst during the whole day. Moreover, other healthy food items can be taken at sehri by the Muslims. The time of sehri ends with azan of Fajr namaz.
  1. Dua of keeping the fast at the end of sehri

    There is also a dua for keeping the fast. When one ends sehri, he/she must recite the following dua;
    وَبِصَوْمِ غَدٍ نَّوَيْتُ مِنْ شَهْر رَمَضَانَ
    Translation: “I intend to keep the fast for tomorrow in the month of Ramadan.”
    This dua is an intention that one is keeping the fast. Intention is to tell ourselves verbally that we are keeping the fast and intention or neeyat is a very important thing. We keep fasts for the sake of Allah in this holy month.

  1. Fasting till Maghrib

    Then after sehri, Muslims don’t eat or drink anything till Maghrib. Also, they don’t get into any sexual intercourse during fasting.
  1. Opening the fast at the time of Maghrib with the dua:

    After keeping the fast till Maghrib, Muslims finally open their fast at the time of Maghrib with the following dua;
     اللَّهُمَّ اِنِّى لَكَ صُمْتُ وَبِكَ امنْتُ وَعَليْكَ تَوَكّلتُ وَ عَلى رِزْقِكَ اَفْطَرْتُ
    Translation: O Allah! I fasted for You and I believe in You and I put my trust in You and I break my fast with Your sustenance.”

  1. Doing iftar:

    Then Muslims start doing the iftar in which they eat food and drink water. Most of the Muslims start their iftar by eating the dates. Here the fast of the Muslims completes and all these points are part of the entire method of fasting in Ramadan.

Ramadan is a sacred month in the Islamic calendar and there is a great importance of this month in Quran and Hadith. Following Quranic verses and hadith show the significance of Ramadan;

“Oh you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you many learn piety and righteousness.” (2:183)

Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) said, “Whoever observes fasts during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah’s rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven.”

Thus, fasting in a month of Ramadan is a great deed as a result of which Muslims get rewards from Allah and Muslims must know that how to fast in Ramadan according to Islam so that they can fast in this holy month properly.
