Importance and rewards of memorizing Quran

Quran is the last book of Allah which was revealed on Holy Prophet (SAWW). Quran is a book of guidance and Muslims must seek guidance from it to lead a good life here and in the Hereafter. Moreover, memorizing Quran is also very important and there are many benefits and rewards of memorizing Quran.

Importance of memorizing Quran:

There is a great importance of memorizing Quran in Islam. This importance is shown from the rewards that a hafiz/hafiza (one who memorizes Quran) gets for memorizing Quran. Moreover, many ahadiths about memorizing Quran show that there is great significance of Quran’s memorization.

Hadith about Quran’s memorization:

Hazrat Ayesha (RA) narrated that the Prophet (SAWW) stated: “The one who recites the Quran and learns it by heart, will be with the noble righteous scribes (in Heaven) and the one who exerts himself to learn the Quran by heart and recites it with great difficulty, will have a double reward.”

The above mentioned hadith shows the importance of memorizing Quran that the one who will learn this holy book by heart will have the rewards in the life after death.

Al-Fudhail bin ‘Iyyadh said, “The carrier (memorizer) of the Quran is the carrier of the flag of Islam.”

This also marks the importance of memorizing the Holy Quran as the one who is hafiz/hafiza is the flag bearer of Islam which is a great status attached to that person who memorized Quran.

Rewards of memorizing Quran:

There are many rewards and advantages of memorizing Quran in this world and the Hereafter. Following are some of the many rewards and benefits of the Quran’s recitation;

  1. Reward regarding the status of the one who memorized Quran
    Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr narrated that the Prophet (SAWW) said: “It will be said to the companion of the Quran (i.e., the one who memorized and studied it): ‘Read, advance in status and recite as you used to do in the world, for your status will be commensurate with the last aayah that you recite.’”
  1. Being the best for learning Quran
    Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) said, “The best amongst you is the one who learns the Quran and teaches it.”
    This hadith shows that people who learn Quran and teach it are the best ones among us. Thus, showing the reward learning and teaching of Quran.
  1. Reward for the parents of the one who memorized Quran
    The Prophet (SAWW) said: “Whosoever recites the Quran and practices upon its injunctions, the reciter’s parents will be given a crown on the day of Judgement. The brightness of that crown will be more intense than the brightness of the sun in your actual house.” The Prophet (SAWW) further said: ‘What do you think will be given to the Hafiz (reciter) of the Quran himself?’”
  1. The memorizer of Quran who follows Quran will be sent to Jannah
    Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) said, “Anyone who knows the Quran by heart and follows the lawful and the prohibited according to it, he will be sent to Heaven by Allah.” (Tirmidhi). 
  1. Saved from the fire of hell:
    The Prophet (SAWW) said, “If the Quran is enclosed by skin (i.e., if a person memorises the entire Quran), then Allah will never burn it in the Fire (of Hell).” (al-Bayhaqee)
