Importance of Zakat in light of Quran and Hadith

Zakat is one of the pillars of Islam which means purity and cleanliness. Zakat can also be called as poor due and it was made obligatory after the event of migration from Makkah to Madina. There is great importance of Zakat in Islam and it has very positive effects on society. Also, in Quran and Hadith, there is a mention of Zakat which shows its significance. There are many rewards and benefits of paying Zakat as well. However, being Muslims, we must know the importance of Zakat in the light of Quran and Hadith in order to perform our this duty with more zest.

Significance of Zakat in the light of Quran:

In Quran, Zakat is mentioned several times which shows its importance. Moreover, where these is pure faith discussed in Quran, Zakat is also mentioned there with Salah. However, following are the translations of verses of Quran in which Zakat has been mentioned; thus, showing the significance of Zakat.

  • Those who believe and do deeds of righteousness, and establish regular prayer and pay poor due will have their reward with their Lord..” (Surah Al-Baqarah, Verse:277)
  • “These are verses of the Book full of Wisdom, a guide and mercy to the doers of good, those who establish prayer and pay poor due and they have faith in the Hereafter with certainty.” (Surah Luqman, Verses:2-4)
  • “Zakat expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakah] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler – an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.” (Surah Tawbah, Verse:60)

Importance of Zakat in the light of Hadith:

There is a mention of Zakat in ahadith as well which further shows the significance of Zakat. Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) ordered the Muslims to pay Zakat. Thus, as Muslims, we must fulfil our this religious duty as it is very progressive for the economic and social system of any country. Following are some ahadith in which there is a mention of Zakat; thus, showing the Zakat’s importance in the light of Hadith.

  • Hazrat Ibn Abbas reported that Abu Sufyan told him the hadith of Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) that the “Holy Prophet (SAWW) commanded the Muslims to establish prayer, to pay poor due, to keep good relations with relatives, and to be chaste.”
  • Hazrat Ibn Abbas reported that when the Messenger of Allah (SAWW) sent Mu’adh to Yemen, he (SAWW) said to him, “You are going to people of a Divine Book. First invite them to the worship of Allah and when they come to know Allah, inform them that Allah has enjoined on them five prayers in every day and night, and if they start offering these prayers, inform them that Allah has enjoined on them Zakat. And it is to be taken from the rich amongst them and given to the poor amongst them.”

Thus, there is great importance of Zakat in Islam and Muslims must know its significance. Moreover, the event of declaring war against those tribes who refused to pay Zakat to the Bait-ul-Mal (state treasury) by Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (RA) also shows the significance of Zakat. Zakat has great impacts in society and we should never neglect our this religious duty so that we can gain the pleasure of Allah.
