Panjtan Pak or the Noble Five in Islam

Panjtan Pak or the Noble Five refers to the five very important personalities of Islam. The very first is the Hazrat Muhammad (SAWW) and the other four are the people from his beloved family namely, Hazrat Ali (RA), Hazrat Fatimah (RA), Hazrat Hassan (AS) and Hazrat Hussain (AS). There are the purified souls who are exalted. That are loved and respected by the Muslims a lot.

Meaning of Panjtan:

The literal meaning of Panjtan is the people of the cloak or the five people and it is an Islamic term.

Mention of Panjtan in the Holy Quran:

The following Quranic verse contains the mention of Panjtan or the Noble Five;

“Allah only wishes to remove all abomination from you, ye members of the Family, and to make you pure and spotless.” (Surah Ahzaab, verse 44)

According to the hadith quoted by Allama Abi Jafar Muhammad bin Jareer Tabri (Allah’s mercy be upon him), the Prophet (SAWW) said about the above mentioned verse that, “This verse is revealed about the ‘Panjtan’. For me and Ali and Hasan and Hussain and Hazrat Fatimah (May Allah be pleased with them all), Verily Almighty Allah wants, O family of Prophet, that (He) keeps the impurity away from you and makes you pure and further very pure.”

5 great personalities of Islam:

 The five great personalities of Islam, called Panjtan Pak are respected by the Muslims a lot. The Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) is the last prophet of Allah who brought the message of Allah to the people of this world.

Hazrat Ali (RA) was son-in-law and cousin of the Holy Prophet (SAWW). He is also the last caliph of Islam and served Islam greatly in his time dealing with the factions created at that time.

Hazrat Fatimah (RA) was the beloved daughter of the Holy Prophet (SAWW). She was also the wife of Hazrat Ali (RA) and mother of Hazrat Hassan (RA) and Hazrat Hussain (RA). The most used title for Hazrat Fatima (RA) is “al-Zahra” which means “the shining one.”

Hazrat Hassan (RA) and Hazrat Hussain (RA) were the grandsons of the Holy Prophet (SAWW) and the children of Hazrat Fatimah (RA) and Hazrat Ali (RA). Both the brothers served a lot for the purpose of Islam.

  • The Prophet (SAWW) said to Hazrat Ali (RA), Hazrat Fatimah (RA), Hazrat Hassan (RA) and Hazrat Hussain (RA): “I am at war with whoever makes war with you, and peace for whoever makes peace with you.” [Jāmiʿ at-Tirmidhī, Kitāb al-Manāqib]
  • Hazrat Ayesha (RA) reported that Allah’s Messenger (SAWW) went out one morning wearing a striped cloak of the black camel’s hair that there came Ḥasan bin ʿAlī. He wrapped him under it; then came Ḥusain and he wrapped him under it along with the other one (Ḥasan). Then came Fatima and he took her under it, then came ʿAlī and he also took him under it and then said:
    “Allah only desires to take away any uncleanliness from you, O people of the household, and purify you (thorough purifying).” [Ṣaḥīḥ al-Muslim, chapter on merits of Ahl al-Bayt]

Both the ahadiths tell us about the great status and position of the family of the Holy Prophet (SAWW). Thus, the Panjtan are really respectable personalities of Islam who have served Islam a lot.
