“There are two occasions of joy for a fasting person: one when he breaks his fast, and the other when he meets his Lord, and the (bad) breath (of a fasting person) is better in the sight of Allah than the fragrance of musk.” (Al-Bukhari)Ramzan is an important month for Muslims. In this month, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk. It is also important to know what not to do while fasting to make fasts valid. However, Ramzan is a month in which Muslims do lots of ibadat to gain the pleasure of Allah and get great rewards.

What not to do while fasting:

There are certain things which Muslims shouldn’t do while fasting as some things can break the fast while others can reduce the rewards. Thus, what not to do while fasting includes several things which are mentioned below;

  1. Eating, drinking and sexual intercourse:

It is known that eating, drinking intentionally and getting into sexual intercourse while fasting break the fast.

  1. Lying or using bad speech:

According to Shaykh Mohammad Ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen, lying, swearing or using bad speech while fasting doesn’t break the fast but it lessens the rewards of fasting.

  1. Swimming or diving into water:

As per Shaykh Mohammad Ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen and Shaykh Muqbil, swimming or diving in water while fasting doesn’t break the fast yet it is not liked to swim during fasting especially in the sea water.

  1. Vomiting:

Vomiting while fasting doesn’t break the fast but if it is done intentionally during fasting then it does break the fast as per Shaykh Ibn Baz.

  1. IV Fluids:

IV Fluids break the fast according to Shaykh Mohammad Ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen Fatawa Arkaanul-Islaam: Vol. 021 P.658. It is based on the ruling that nutritive intravenous injections are just like having food and drinks as they play a role of nourishing the body.

  1. Cupping:

Cupping breaks the fast if done while fasting as Prophet Muhammad (SAWW) said, “The one cupping and the one undergoing cupping both break their fast.” (Sahih Abu Dawud no. 2074)

  1. Donating blood:

According to Shaykh Mohammad Ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen Fatawa Arkaanul-Islaam: Vol. 02 p.860, donating blood while fasting breaks the fast because taking a large amount of blood from the body is similar to cupping which also breaks the fast.

  1. Masturbation:

As per Shaykh Mohammad Ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen, masturbation during fasting breaks the fast but if the person doesn’t ejaculate then the fast of that person is not broken yet it is important to repent from the sin of masturbation.

  1. Smoking:

According to Shaykh Mohammad Ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen, smoking while fasting breaks the fast.

  1. Nutritional injections:

According to Shaykh Mohammad Ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen, nutritional injections break the fast because these injections are like food.

  1. Nose drops:

The Holy Prophet (SAWW) said, “Snuff water up into the nose deeply, unless you are fasting.” As per Islam Question & Answer, this hadith shows that it is not allowed to let the water reach the throat through nose for the person who is fasting. Thus, if nose drops are taken in small quantity by the fasting person such that they won’t reach the throat then the fast of that person is valid but if the drops reach the throat and they can be tasted by the fasting person then the fast of that person is broken and he/she has to make up the fast.

Hence, Muslims must know about what not to do while fasting as it is important that their fast remains valid and they get their rewards instead of losing them.
